Short Story
When Jonathan was due for his paycheck, the eager young man rushed to the mailbox to pick the envelope which contained his money, but to also find a letter which made his disastrous day even more crazy. “We inform you that: because you were consecutively behind on your payments, we have no choice but to seize your holdings including your house”, read the letter from the bank.
Jonathan quickly passed the news to his wife. Furiously, she replied, “Jonathan, we can’t take this anymore, ask your job for a raise.” “Honey, I did”, he replied. “We are three months behind on our mortgage, what did we do to deserve this” says the wife who is worried sick. Jonathan was the only person in the house was had a job, this gave a little income to the family especially because recently their daughter, Maggy, lost both of her legs in a car wreck. All their savings went into her massive medical bills and the wife quit her job to take care of her. This used to be different when the couple were both working but now that there is only one person who is providing for the entire family, it was very hard.
Due to his late payments, it is impossible for him to take out another loan to repay his debts. When they were prosperous, when it didn’t feel like their whole world was coming down, the parents set up a handsome fund for their two young kids to cover their college fund when its time…. “Jonathan, this is hard. We cannot take away Maggy and Kate’s college money”, says the kind mother who always put her kids first hand before anything else. “Baby, there will be no house to live in if we don’t do this. Well find another way for the kids, we always do, but for now, this family needs to be saved.” Jonathan replied in a confident yet fragile tone.
Looking back at the first day he put money aside for his kids’ future, Jonathan looks up and says to his wife, “That was one of the best things I’ve done…do you remember how many times I looked at the money.” “You used to check at least four times a week. It meant a lot to you and I know that you want to secure our kids future, but now I agree with you. Let’s focus on holding on to what we have right now and the future, the future will play out for the better I hope.” The wife replied.
The kids were taken to their grandparents’ house, away from the instability. They would stay until things cool off and go back to how they were. The kids didn’t know about the issues at home, they weren’t supposed to. To the, everything was normal. “Granny, when are we going to see mommy and daddy.” Maggi told her grandmother in a shallow voice. “Soon, baby, soon.” replied the worried grandmother. “your father is a hard worker, I know he must of figure out and made everything workout.” She continued.
